WHY ARE AUSTRALIA AND NEWSSTAND KNOWN AS THE “ANTIPODES"
The
parts of the earth that are directly opposite site each other are known as Antipodes.
In the past, the Europeans and Americans believed that if you dug a hole, in a
straight line through the center of the Earth, you would come out other side,
right in china ! But this is not true. In reality, if you dig a straight tunnel
from most a areas, of Europeans or the US, you will come out into the oceans.
Geographically, the antipodes OF BRITAIN and Ireland lie in the pacific oceans,
south of new Zealand. The Irish and BRITISH USED to refer to Australia and New
Zealand as "Antipodes" and term is now commonly used to describes
these places.
